Project Description

The 96th Avenue Pedestrian Bridge will provide a critical pathway for Tolleson Union High School students and community members to safely cross Van Buren Street, a main thoroughfare for the City of Tolleson that sees thousands of vehicles per day.

Project improvements include construction of a fully Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant pedestrian bridge across Van Buren Street at 96th Avenue featuring an elevator and staircase on each side, connecting pedestrians from the northeast corner of the intersection to the south side of the road. Also included are railings, handrails, lighting, minor signing and marking improvements and aesthetic features.

Aesthetic improvements include the “TOLLESON” lettering on the bridge. Lighting will be incorporated into the lettering to provide clear visibility at night as well as allow color-LED changing capabilities. In addition, a dynamic message sign (DMS) will be placed below the lettering, allowing the City to display different messages along this vital corridor.

Tolleson Union High School has recently made upgrades to their pick-up/drop-off locations, and this project will provide connectivity and continuity with those improvements.

The City of Tolleson successfully secured $3.7 million in federal funding for this project.
