| Pure Wisdom: The quote “The songs of our ancestors are also the songs of our children”, by Philip Carr-Gomm, illustrates how our ancestor’s knowledge is passed down to future generations. This sculpture is designed to communicate Tolleson’s history of passing on their experiences to future generations. Each element in the sculpture has significance. The sun shines over the whole piece as a symbol of nurturing. The hands represent the ancestors of Tolleson that are cultivating future generations by passing their knowledge, symbolized by the water, onto their future generation as depicted by the sprout. Finally, roots are shown growing within the crop rows to represent the future generation’s impact on the world resulting from the mentoring and nurturing of previous generations. | Family Tree: This sculpture expresses how family is a timeless bond that surpasses all other relationships. The family stands together with their hands reaching for the sky depicting the unity and the aspirations of the family with the child representing the sprout of hope for future generations. | Tradition: This sculpture expresses Tolleson’s culture through colors, design, and materials. The mariachi and the ballet folklorico dancer represent Tolleson’s spirit and zest for life. The stained glass design boldly expresses the city’s religious conviction. The contrast of both warm and cool color schemes in the piece allows viewers to connect with the vibrancy and hospitality of the community, similar to the feeling a person experiences when visiting Tolleson during a community celebration. The cool colors are used to subtly depict the Estrella Mountains; the ever present backdrop of this community. Finally, the cylinder form of the piece embodies the continuity of the culture, tradition, and unity of Tolleson. | New Heights: This sculpture embodies our community’s continuous pursuit of progress. The wagon wheel base which represents building upon our past. At the apex is the torch symbolizing aspirations for a bright future. At the center of the sculpture are supporting hands that signify the strength and stability of the people of Tolleson who altogether provide the foundation upon which our community is built. The mantra, “Honoring our Past & Positioning our Future” reflects Tolleson’s pride in our historical accomplishments and commitment to stay true to our history, culture and traditions as we seek to advance the prosperity and quality of life for our future generations. | True Heroes: This sculpture reflects the pride felt by our community derived from our local veterans who have served and are currently serving our country in every branch of our nation’s military. The sculpture does not tie into a specific military era, branch, ranking, or gender, and is designed to recognize all military heroes who have served and sacrificed on behalf of our national and community ideals. | Evolving the World: This sculpture embodies Tolleson’s evolution through the integration of both agriculture and industry. The agricultural component is represented by the organic look of a tree with bark, branches, leaves, and pecans and is intertwined with the industrial element consisting of a steel trunk and I-beams that are set in right and acute angles. To illustrate Tolleson’s continuous economic expansion the tree roots break through their container at the base of the sculpture. Centered in the sculpture is the sun which symbolizes our community’s pride, determination and work ethic which were the essential elements of our economic progress and evolution. | Unity: This sculpture depicts how the people of Tolleson unite to hoist our city into a prosperous future. This design interprets how our community is both willing and eager to join together to overcome every obstacle. The figures were purposely made ambiguous in form as a way to reflect Tolleson’s diverse background and to represent the contributions made by citizens of every age, race, gender and religion. The figures are depicted in a unified struggle to uphold the sun which represents the future of the community. The predominant theme of this piece is the acknowledgment that together the people of this community have and will shape the future of our city. | The Foundation: The foundation upon which each piece of art is placed symbolizes Tolleson’s history. The river rock gabion was utilized in Tolleson as a component of the irrigation system which represents the importance of the agricultural era in Tolleson. The dark brown wood represents the ground, trees and earth; also symbolic of the importance of agriculture in our history. To contrast the agricultural theme, the metal structure, wire mesh and banding is representative of the industrial era of our community. Altogether these components comprise not only the foundations upon which these works of art are placed but also represent the foundations upon which our community was built.
