Conclusion of the Mural Installations at the Civic Center – TIA Project
TOLLESON, AZ – October 18, 2023 – Tolleson's Civic Center recently underwent a remarkable transformation with the completion of the final mural on October 12th, marking the conclusion of the Tolleson Initiative for the Arts (TIA) project to enhance the area's aesthetics and celebrate the town's rich heritage.
Artist Maria Madrid Reed has captured the essence of Tolleson's history, highlighting the transformative power of the canal. This captivating mural narrates the tale of how the canal, with roots dating back to prehistoric times with the Hohokam tribe, played a pivotal role in turning Tolleson into the renowned "Vegetable Capital of the World" during the 1800s.
The mural showcases the beloved pecan trees that once graced the canal's banks, symbolizing unity and the close-knit spirit of the community. For generations, people of all ages came together to share pecans, passing down cherished values and traditions.
In a breathtaking visual, starlings soar gracefully in unison against the backdrop of a rising sun, casting reflective gleams in the serene waters of the canal. These tranquil waters carry with them the stories of joys, sacrifices, and the enduring love that nurtures the town's soil. This mural embodies a bright and promising future for all of Tolleson.
The Civic Center now stands as an embodiment of Tolleson's history, culture, and community. It invites both residents and visitors to explore and experience the town's heritage through art.
